Introduction:
BEAUTIFUL MONSTERS is an edgy half-hour, premium-cable or streaming style character-based serial DRAMEDY, proposed for five 8-episode seasons. Think “Russian Doll”, “Fleabag” or “Californication” with the same focus on diversity of “Sense8” or “Orange is the New Black”. It aims to be thought provoking and topical, while remaining funny and entertaining. Its goal is to have the viewer experience a roller-coaster of emotion throughout each episode and come to know and love the characters while experiencing through their eyes what it means to be an LGBTQI+ person in the 21st century. Season 1 Synopsis: Lesbian. Gay. Bisexual. Transgender. Sexuality. Homophobia. Diversity. Everyone knows these words. But how many people really know what it’s like to live their life as a part of a sexual minority? MOLLY HARPER thinks she knows. Sure, she was raised in a conservative Western Sydney household by parents who voted “no” to marriage equality, think that Tony Abbot was the best Prime Minister since John Howard and that Trump is doing a bang-up job as the American President, but she’s not like them! She really knows how hard things are for people who identify as LGBTQI+. (She can even tell you what all the initials stand for!) Sure, her boyfriend (OLIVER FAWKES) refers to gay men as “homos” and doesn’t like having “that shit” rubbed in his face, but everyone’s entitled to an opinion, right? When she accidentally offends her gay university lecturer ANSON SMITH, Molly is tasked with writing an essay about sexual minorities, and embarks on an excersise to learn more about what it really means to be some colour of queer. On this journey, she befriends a diverse group of POLYAMOROUS PANSEXUAL people who are all in a relationship together, and she begins to realise how colourful the world really is. There’s LAYLA, a non-binary children’s book author who doesn’t love based upon gender. There’s PETER, a pansexual man with a tragic past. There’s ASHLEY, a proud transgender woman, and there’s CALUM, who’s addicted to sex - and doesn’t care who it’s with. As Molly learns more about each of them, they grow close, and she begins to truly understand what it means to be queer... while learning something about herself along the way. |
